Walks and Hikes

The Whakapapa Nature Walk
This sealed loop track (with wheelchair access) offers a glimpse of the unique flora of Tongariro National Park. A series of information panels explain what you are seeing in what was formerly known as the ‘Alpine Garden’. Allow 20 to 30 minutes.

Mounds Walk
A 20 minute walk will take you to large mounds, believed to have formed thousands of years ago, by debris avalanches, during one of Mount Ruapehu’s periods of volcanic activity. Information panels on the track explain more about these bizarre mounds.

Tawhai Falls
After a short stroll through mountain toatoa and beech forest, you will come upon Tawhai Falls, tumbling over the edge of an ancient lava flow. Kayakers often paddle over the falls – a sight to behold! Allow 20 minutes.

Ridge Track Walk
After a short climb through low beech forest (around 10 minutes), the track emerges into alpine shrub lands with panoramic views of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and the surrounding National Park. Allow around 20 minutes.

Taranaki Falls
The Department of Conservation describes the Taranaki Falls in this way:

“..Tumbling 20 metres over the edge of a large lava flow, which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago, Taranaki Falls plunge into a boulder-ringed pool. From below the falls, there are spectacular views into the water-worn gorges of the Wairere Stream...” Allow 1.5 - 2 hours.

Silica Rapids Walk
This 2 to 3 hour loop track follows an unusually coloured stream, through beech forest, taking you to the creamy-white terraces of the Silica Rapids. This track also rewards walkers with great views of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu. Allow 2 to 3 hours return.

Lake Rotopounamu Walk
Translated as ‘Greenstone Lake’ and nestled on the side of Mount Pihanga, this beautiful lake is a popular spot for bird-watchers and nature lovers, and a great place for a swim! You can take an easy 20 minute walk one-way to the lake to enjoy the picnic, fishing and swimming spots, or enjoy the 2-hour walk around the lake (a 5 kilometre loop track).

Tama Lakes Walk
On this extension of the Taranaki Falls walk, you’ll cross rolling tussock country and alpine herb fields. Walkers will enjoy the flat areas of the lower lake and then begin a steep climb to the upper lake - both lakes are old explosion craters. Allow 5 to 6 hours.

Ohinetonga Track
Winding through forest and past beautiful scenery, you’ll come to the Ohinetonga Lagoon. There are picnic areas and great places to swim along the river.

Ngauruhoe Summit Walk
The 2500 year old Mt Ngauruhoe entices many visitors to its summit. Mount Ngauruhoe is traditionally one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes, but has been relatively quiet since 1975. This hike is best suited to experienced climbers.
